Evolution of the working woman

Working women have so many options with their clothing that we really are spoilt for choice. Fashion can affect our choice of colours, materials and style of our shirts and suits and this is influenced by celebrities and new designers challenging the perception of what is acceptable.  Let’s take a look at what you would have been wearing in previous decades – we love a bit of nostalgia!

1960’s – the Swinging Sixties.

The time of the Women’s Liberation Movement and Mary Quant. The mini skirt and nylon briefs were introduced and the most notable fashion news of the decade was the amazing Jackie Kennedy. Young, sassy and a trend setter, Jackie Kennedy influenced many women – if you were working in the 60’s it is likely you would have been wearing a plain shift dress and a box jacket with oversized buttons.

1970’s – equal pay brings confidence!

This was an important time for women in the workplace.   However the fashion was a little stuffy – despite Karl Lagerfield being the designer of the moment, power suits were all the rage as were blazers and elasticated trousers!

1980’s – Hollywood influences!

If you were working in the 80’s, it is likely you would have been emulating Princess Diana’s subtle but elegant style. However, the 80’s also brought some shocking fashion influences – namely shoulder pads straight from Dynasty and Dallas. Also gracingthe 80’s were coloured shoes and matching handbags and the dreaded Filofax.

1990’s – elegance steps forward

Donna Karan took designing for women to a new level and smooth lines and elegant clothes started to become popular. The Rachel haircut was a hit for most of the 90’s – it is the most requested haircut ever.

2000’s – the Millennium

With the turn of a new decade, the fashion returned to professional yet comfortable clothing. The emphasis was to dress well for you, not others. Fashion allowed women to feel feminine, yet business like in the workplace.

Present Day

Celebrities still have a major influence on our fashion, but more in our evening and day to day wear. Work wear is flexible in many workplaces, with the emphasis on being clean and presentable, rather than the necessity of a formal suit.

Every face needs a neckline to fit

Who would have thought such a small part of your outfit could dramatically change your look.  It can ruin a look you’ve spent ages trying to achieve as well as adding that confidence you need to deliver a marketing presentation to a room of directors.

Fancyneck create their shirts with this is mind, knowing that we don’t all have the perfect oval face and that we can all look gorgeous in a shirt that fits perfectly to our body shape.  The shirts are beautifully tailored specifically with women in mind.  It is not possible to get a “one shirt fits all” like a man’s shirt, us ladies have curves and the shirt should embrace this.

Which shirt works for your body shape?

Naomi Ladies Shirt

This elegant cut out neckline and half mandarin collar is perfect for those with an angular face.  The Naomi shirt has a cut out neckline which is not too deep or wide but is scooped to provide the effect needed to add a softer line of focus for the eye to be drawn to.  This shirt adds curves to give the illusion of the face being more rounder.  This is not an ideal shape for those with a wide neck because their neck does not finish where the neckline starts making the neck look wider than what it is.  The Gabby style is a great alternative.  Those ladies with a larger bust may prefer the Krystal design as a longer and thinner neckline.

If you have a round face, you need a neckline that gives the impression of the face being longer.  The neckline needs to be deeper instead of being wide.  This shirt is designed for ladies with a round face as the cut out neckline creates this effect.  This is a very popular style of neckline and does work on most ladies, but if you are a lady that has a long neck this may create the illusion of being longer.  To overcome this wear a necklace to break up the neck or wear a cardigan to create layers.

Willie Ladies Shirt

This beautiful shirt features a full curve cut out neckline suited for those with a long face.

The long face has the opposite principles to a round face as the neckline needs to make the face appear wider allowing the eye to be drawn horizontally.  Ladies who are long faced tend to be tall and thin and a full curve cut out would give the illusion needed to make the face more oval.

Gabby Ladies Shirt

Featuring a full curve cut out neckline.  This shirt is an edgier version of the classic scoop neckline.  It works for most neck types but those with short or wide necks should wear with caution as it draws attention to the neck and creates bulkiness so may also not suit those with a larger bust.  However is a lifesaver for those with a smaller bust as it can be difficult finding a shirt to flatter.

Finding a flattering neckline is like putting a puzzle together.  Look at all your features and piece together.

“The only real elegance is in the mind; if you’ve got that, the rest really comes from it.”

Can a woman have everything?

As a general statement, yes of course women can have everything! However I am talking about work. In particular work outfits. Don’t groan – we all face the same problems.  Trying to dress in the morning for an unpredictable day at the office is a nightmare for all professional women. Do you dress for comfort? Will there be any unexpected meetings? Will you need to be dashing all over town? Will you end up at a business lunch or after work drinks?  Taking extra outfit choices into work to cover all eventualities is a complete pain, but the only option you had. Until now.

Fancyneck Ladies Shirt

My current favourite is the Naomi shirt – named after the stunning supermodel, Naomi Campbell. I admire her strength, elegance and individuality and that is the essence I captured when designing this shirt. With a gorgeous cap sleeve and contrasting white mandarin collar, this shirt is perfect for the boardroom or bistro. Best of all it is currently only £25.00 in our current sale! Available in sizes 6 – 14, this shirt is also machine washable. In a gorgeous, summery shade of red, this shirt suits all skin tones. So grab a piece of dynamic work clothing to suit all your needs.

Fancyneck shirts

Fancyneck shirts

I’ve witnessed a great number of run of the mill, customised creations on our fashion desk. Then I came across Fancyneck, brainchild of Feyi Olufisibe. Her creations don’t involve minor tinkering, but clever restyling. This has involved her cutting up a series of ladies shirts and reassembling in a style that is new, fresh and dynamic and also befitting of any boardroom or client tête-a-tête.

After her initial ‘D Neck’ creation Feyi has produced nine different shirt designs; sleeved and sleeveless. The range comprises striped and plain colours. Cuts are modern, with a structured tailored appearance. All shirts have been produced using the highest quality 100% cotton, I know I’m wearing one as I hit my keyboard. They’re machine washable too. Sizes range from 6 – 14.

I personally think the price point of between £35 and £40 is more than a touch generous. Cuff links are available too. Added to that long sleeved shirt purchasers come with a smart gift box and cuff links. This really is the gift that keeps on giving. The Fancyneck 2011 Summer collection is available now at
